What is Relay For Life?
Relay For Life is the American Cancer Society's main fundraising event. It gives communities the opportunity to Celebrate the lives of those who have battled cancer, Remember those we have lost, and Fight Back against the disease. It is an overnight event, during which teams walk together around a track, symbolizing the fight against cancer: cancer never sleeps, so we don't sleep. Before, during, and after the event, teams and individuals raise money for the American Cancer Society. The event is moving, emotional, uplifting, spirited, and life changing. To learn more about the event, or to watch a video about the event, visit the official What Is Relay Site.
How is Relay For Life organized at Brandeis?
At Brandeis University, the event was launched by the Athletics Department in December 2007 by Niki Rybko and Carol Simon. Together with a student Event Chair, they have remained as important leaders in our Relay community. Today, Colleges Against Cancer plans the event as one of the club's key strategic directions. However, planning committee positions are open to ALL members of the Brandeis community, so we'd love to have your help! Of course, nothing would be possible without our wonderful staff partner Ashley Blum, who serves as the link between our chapter and the American Cancer Society.
Celebrate!
At Relay For Life, we Celebrate the lives of all those who have had cancer, honoring their courage and perseverance through this terrible disease. Last year, we honored more than thirteen Survivors. We invited all Survivors to join us in a special lap around the track and Survivorship dinner, where everyone shared stories, laughter, and tears. Relay For Life brings people together and gives them strength to continue, and thats exactly what we saw that night.
Are you a Survivor and would like to participate next year? Email the Survivorship Chair to find out more.

Remember!
The Luminaria Ceremony is one of the most poignant aspects of the night. This memorial ceremony gives Relayers a chance to grieve, to remember loved ones lost, and honor their fight. The names and pictures of Brandeis community members who have battled cancer are presented during the ceremony. Small white Luminaria bags, in memory, support, and honor of all those who have fought are illuminated around the track while one community-sized bag in the middle brings us all together. After the music stops and the moment of silence, everyone takes one lap together to Remember.
Fight Back!
Our Fight Back ceremony is different every year, but one thing never changes: Relayers get excited to FIGHT BACK against cancer! Participants can take pledges to stay healthy, get a loved one a check-up appointment, or even sumo-wrestle against cancer! We have learned about how cancer affects each and every one of us and challenged each other to help bring about a world without cancer.
